Mattole River Volunteer Summer Steelhead Dive
Mark your calendars for the annual Mattole River Summer Steelhead Dive, which will be held in the Mattole watershed on June 19th and 20th, 2026!
There will be an optional training on the evening of the 18th (recommended for first-time divers). The Mattole Salmon Group will host a BBQ for volunteers on the evening of the 20th.
Conducted since 1996, this annual watershed-wide citizen science survey is our primary source of information on the abundance and distribution of one of the southernmost populations of adult summer-run steelhead. These dives also provide important information on the distribution of other native and non-native aquatic species, such as western pond turtles, Pacific lamprey, and western pearlshell mussels.
We welcome volunteers of all skill levels wishing to spend a day or two in the clear waters of the Mattole. Participation will require the ability to swim/hike 2-4 miles in Class I water to complete a survey reach.
Stay tuned for more detailed information and an RSVP form. Feel free to pass this along to others who may be interested. Please contact Emma ([email protected]) with any questions, or if you would like to be removed from this email list.
