Wilderness volunteer workshop in the Fall

The California Wilderness Legacy Project will host a workshop titled "Volunteer Associations: Partners in Stewardship" on September 16-17, 2005.

Impacts to wilderness brought about by increasing public use coupled with declining agency wilderness management budgets are an ongoing problem in fast-growing California. This situation has led to the need for an increase in cooperative efforts among wilderness managers and wilderness volunteer organizations to help preserve and protect our wilderness resources. This workshop is intended to help address this need and is presented in partnership with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew, Stanislaus Wilderness Volunteers, and Sierra Club Service Trips, with support from the Forest Service-Pacific Southwest Region.

The workshop will provide educational opportunities for current and potential wilderness and trail stewardship organizations, volunteer organizations, and Forest Service employees. National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management staff and associations are encouraged to participate.

Individual workshops include subjects such as volunteer recruitment, grant writing, and volunteer motivation and incentives. The workshop will also offer plenty of opportunities to share ideas and socialize,
including a Friday night BBQ.

The exact site of the workshop is to be determined, but will likely be in the vicinity of Huntington Lake, located 65 miles east of Fresno. Accommodations will include camping on-site, with hotels nearby.
