its mid-season activities. About 6300 native Mattole
chinook fry are now in their rearing pond at Arcanum
ranch, where they will remain until they are marked
and released into the Mattole headwaters close to the
new moon in May.
In March, the Salmonid Restoration Federation
conference in Chico provided many opportunities for
networking among restoration groups, with emphasis on
difficulties encountered from the listing of salmonids
as threatened. As a result of discussions held at the
SRF conference, MSG will soon be meeting with
representatives of the National Marine Fisheries
Service and the Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game in order
to develop guidelines for our rescue rearing program
that serve the needs and satisfy the concerns of
these agencies.
Our downstream migrant trapping program for 2001 has
begun, with traps operating near Ettersburg and
Petrolia. We anticipate learning the degree of
success of the 2000-2001 spawning season, but we are
apprehensive due to the large proportion of spawning
that took place in the less-than-ideal lower reaches
of the Mattole. But thanks (ironically) to the dry
year and low flows, we remain hopeful that redds and
eggs were spared from the damage usually associated
with high flows in the lower river.
At our March board meeting we had the pleasure of
