After over a decade of service in southern Humboldt County, the Institute for Sustainable Forestry is undergoing a self-assessment process to determine how we might better meet our mission of promoting wood products businesses that are based upon sustainable forestry within the local community. As one component of this re-assessment, we have recently moved from the mill site in Piercy, into Garberville.

For the past five years in particular, ISF has worked to foster a hardwood industry in the local area, with the Piercy mill as the industry hub. Currently, we are maintaining the lease at the mill site while looking into alternative financing arrangements that will allow us to continue to serve our mission. We are also taking this opportunity to fully examine the lessons we?ve learned in attempting to promote sustainable forestry and a locally based wood products industry within an economic paradigm driven primarily by a global commodities market. Finally, we are looking into ways in which our organization can serve the fire hazard reduction needs of our area through accessing monies available for this purpose and channeling these monies to serve on-the-ground projects throughout our region. We hope our move into town will make us more visible and accessible to the general public and invite anyone to stop by our new office to discuss these or any other issues of concern to you.
