Raising public awareness and mobilizing support for threatened old growth forests ? the last refuges for coho salmon, marbled murrelets and other species ? is also part of BACH?s focus.
In the late summer and fall of 2001, BACH produced and distributed fact sheets and newsletters on the Preserve planning process, the Hole In Headwaters logging, public comment on incidental take of endangered Coho salmon through logging, the David ?Gypsy? Chain case, and a myriad of Headwaters Forest-related issues. Media work on those issues kept our fax machines and phones humming. Our hotline, public meetings, and tabling bring us into contact with hundreds of activists, potential activists, journalists and other organizations. For those behind the Redwood Curtain, we say, ?Use us!?
Last Fall, BACH organized a hike with BLM biologists, foresters, North Coast restoration experts and activists to look at some of the cutover areas in the Preserve. The BLM will be addressing our concerns for restoration activities. Thus far BLM has good staff working on the Headwaters Preserve plan, and forest advocates have had success affecting the process in a positive way. Our new and still-under-construction web site is www.HeadwatersPreserve.org.
