AFI and a coalition of international rainforest protection groups and indigenous communities in Ecuador have launched the Amazonian Tropical Wilderness Area project. The proposed conservation corridor will expand and integrate existing reserves to create a 5-million hectare (12.5-million acre), management unit in the extremely threatened Amazonian lowland tropical forest. The area is home to over 500 bird species, nine species of primates, and both pink and gray freshwater dolphins.
November, 2002 Update
AFI?s small, dedicated staff continues in its tireless efforts to protect Ancient Forests. As the primary partner in the successful Gilham Butte acquisition effort, AFI continues its involvement as a ?Cooperative Management Plan? between local groups and the Bureau of Land Management is developed. The 5,000 acres of acquisitions and these subsequent efforts have been carried out to create a wildlife corridor linking Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Sinkyone Wilderness. With AFI?s assistance, the ?Redwoods-to-Sea? draft Recreation Plan is now complete and in circulation. This preliminary plan is a cornerstone of the overall Management Plan and is important to show the agencies and the community that the plan is moving forward. The plan shows maps of existing and proposed trails, private roads, and the management of recreational uses. (read more)
