Salmon River Restoration Council

Downloads
The Salmon River Restoration Council (SRRC), a 501(c)(3) organization has been serving the Salmon River watershed and its community since 1992. The mission of our organization is to assess, protect, and maintain the Salmon River ecosystems with the active participation of the local community, focusing on the anadromous fisheries resource and the development of a sustainable economy. Through cooperative management activities, the Council addresses the distinct needs of the Salmon River sub-basin that arise due to the negative impacts of past catastrophic fires and fire management, timber harvest, road construction, mining, grazing, floods, residential and recreational use, as well as the inherent challenges faced in the rugged mountain environment.

Community-Based Restoration on the Salmon River
December 18, 2009
Flowing from the Marble, Russian, and Trinity Alps mountain ranges of far Northern California, the Salmon River is the second-largest tributary to the Klamath. Also called the Cal Salmon since there is a major river in Idaho called the Salmon, it is one of the most biologically intact river systems in the west. As the most pristine major tributary in the entire Klamath River system, it provides abundant amounts of clean, cool water into the Klamath that is crucial to the survival of migrating salmon. Despite this, the fishery of the Salmon River is a remnant of what it once was. Several species of the river's fish are at risk of extinction, and there is great need for additional watershed restoration and protection. (read more)

A Community Response to Wildfire
August 19, 2009
As we go into our third year of below-average rain and snowfall, we should remember the lessons learned in the recent wildland fire years of 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2002 on the Salmon River. Dry years and droughts often coincide with more frequent and intense wildland fire incidents. We at the SRRC, have been very busy working with our partners to improve our understanding of these recent wildland fires, and fire behavior in general on the Salmon River, so that we can improve our response and preparedness for future fires on the landscape and in our yards. We do know that over time these wildland fires have been one of the key features that have influenced and shaped the Salmon River forest and rivers systems, including the local people living, working, and playing here. Salmon River Restoration Council: Please Welcome Our New Partner
December 10, 2007
The Salmon River watershed is 751 square miles and 98.7% federally owned. It is one of the most biologically intact sub-basins of the Klamath River Basin and is entirely within Karuk Ancestral Territory. The Salmon River is known for its high-value fisheries as well as boasting one of the richest regions of species diversity in the temperate zones. It is the largest cold-water contributor to the Klamath River of any tributary in the system. It is home to several species of fish at risk of extinction: summer and winter runs of wild Klamath Mountains Province Steelhead, spring and fall Chinook salmon, and coho salmon. (read more)
